An Important Seat for the Afternoon

A bunny and a fox decided to hang out at a coffee shop one day in September.

I’m here. Got a table outside

— The Bunny texted the Fox.

Walking in now

— The Fox replied to the Bunny.

Fantastic, thought the Bunny. Oftentimes, the Fox was late for coffee and while the Bunny had come to expect this type of tardiness from the Fox she forgave him because she understood that the Fox was just a little flighty and scatterbrained in his nature and that was just something the Bunny had to accept if she wanted to hang out with the Fox.

“I tried to be on time today! Are you proud of me?” Said the Fox to the Bunny as he joined her on the patio.

“You did a great job today, Fox. Sure, I am proud of you.”

“I left early and thought I didn’t want to make you wait today and here I am. Guess what else I did today? I...”

The Fox squinted and put his paw over his eyes.

“Wow the sun is really bright here don’t you think?” Said the Fox.

“Oh I don’t think so, seems perfectly pleasant to me.” The Bunny remarked casually.

The Fox removed his paw from his face and checked to see if the sunshine was all in his head. But as soon as he removed his paw the sun shone so bright in his face his head jerked backwards. As if he was hit by a sun punch.

“Bunny, how can you not see how sunny the sun is today? I am having such a hard time concentrating because the sun is not letting me look at you.”

“Maybe we can switch seats,” said the Bunny.

“Yes, maybe that will work.” The Fox concurred.

So the two friends switched seats.

“Ah this is so much better!" Gushed the Fox. Then, the Fox reached out to take a sip of his Gingerbread Cookie Latte.

“No Fox, that’s my latte we only switched seats. We did not switch lattes yet”

The two friends switched drinks and were finally ready for their conversation to begin.

“How is the sun over there, do you see what I was saying?”

The Bunny looked around to see if she could understand what the Fox was saying but when the Bunny looked up she could hardly see passed the shadow that the edge of the table had cast over her eyes.

“Tbh Fox, I don’t know what you’re talking about but I don’t mind this seat. We can chat now if you like.”

“I would like that very much” said the Fox

And so they chatted for the remainder afternoon. It was a lovely chat filled with anecdotes, stories, jokes, and a heartfelt connection.

The sun remained sunny and bright in the sky until it decided to set for the day. As usual, the sun was pleased with how it helped provide warmth and light for everyone but today, as it set, the sun was also glad to no longer be the cause of anyone's troubles.
