The Giraffe Wants A Waffle

The giraffe was getting ready to go to work. When she woke up this morning she initially thought it was Saturday and that she could sleep in and maybe even make some waffles later. She was so excited that she could spend the whole day doing whatever she wanted to do.

But then she realized it was actually just Thursday, and she scolded herself for not remembering the day correctly because now she was really craving some waffles. This day could not have started off any worse for the giraffe.

The giraffe got ready and went down to her kitchen. She went to make some coffee for herself but realized she was out of her favorite K-Cup for her Keurig. All she had left was the “Donut Shop” flavor, which as many people already know is the worst of the K-Cup flavors. The day had gone from bad to worse. The giraffe could scream.

To add further insult to this injury, the giraffe had recently gotten into doing her own coffee pour-overs. A laborious process that involves meticulously pouring hot water into freshly ground coffee beans at the rate of approximately 30-40 grams of coffee per 500 grams of water. The result is a beautiful and complex cup of coffee to start your day. Meanwhile, the giraffe was pretty sure her “Donut Shop” K-Cup had probably just come with her Keurig and had gone unused this long because it sucked.

At this point, the giraffe couldn’t help but think that apart from being delicious on its own, a pour-over is the perfect complement to a crispy and fluffy homemade waffle.

But no waffle was to be had because the giraffe had to go to work today. Maybe work wouldn’t be so bad. Her boss was counting on her, he always said that — with his words. The giraffe thought saying it with a raise would mean more, but the words were okay too, she guessed, because every now and then her boss would buy the whole office lunch.

Sometimes the giraffe worked late into the night and sometimes even on weekends. Sometimes the giraffe would sit at work, look outside and it would be a beautiful day. Warm sun, bright sky, fluffy clouds. Sometimes, the Day the giraffe was looking at from her office window would be so nice even the moon was out trying to enjoy it.

Maybe her boss would buy lunch for everyone today. And maybe she could take it back to her office. And maybe it would even be a nice day. And the moon would be hanging out and she could look out her window which didn’t open because she worked in a high rise building and she would eat her lunch and dream of one-day sipping on a perfect pour-over while eating waffles with maple syrup and butter and ooooooo and fresh strawberries... Mmmmm.

The giraffe had just remembered that she had fresh strawberries too! She had gotten them from the farmers market and she was dying to use them before they went bad. Why did today have to be THURSDAY and not SATURDAY!

The giraffe wanted all these things. She knew all of these things wouldn’t guarantee that she would have a good day. But the giraffe also knew for sure that if she made herself a pour-over and then made a waffle, and cut up some strawberries then doused everything in syrup and butter — right now — that would be as good as life could feel, right now.

How sad, that life should be good only in the future and not right now...

The giraffe grabbed her phone, she typed an email and sent it off. She got out her fancy new scale that she purchased weeks ago but had barely had the chance to use, and started weighing out 30-40 grams of coffee.
